VHHS Band Concert to be Broadcast Live

Vernon Hills High School's Cougar-TV will air the band concert live beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Take a break Thursday night to check out the Vernon Hills High School band concert, to be broadcast live from 7:30-9:30 p.m. by Cougar-TV on highschoolcube.com. The performance will feature Meri Bennett-Swanson on oboe and Paige Kibbler on French horn.

Vernon Hills Police Seek Young Artists

Submissions are due May 27. Selected artwork will be used on promotional materials for this summer's "Run from the Cops" 5K.

The Vernon Hills Police Department is looking for children's artistic touches as it plans this year's 5K run/walk fundraiser. The department's race committee is seeking original artwork from any student in kindergarten through eighth grade that can be used on posters, flyers and other promotional materials. This year will mark the sixth year "Run from the Cops" event. The proceeds from the July 21 run/walk will benefit Honor Flight Chicago, an organization dedicated to honoring our nation's World War II veterans. Participating veterans are flown to Washington, D.C., to experience the World War II Memorial. Hawthorn Middle School North to Present 'High School Musical Jr.'

The show will run May 17-18.

Students at Hawthorn Middle School North have been working hard to prepare for their spring musical, Disney’s High School Musical Junior. This fast-paced production includes snappy dialogue, contemporary costuming and terrific songs. Students will stage several performances for classmates and younger students, with the final shows planned for 7 p.m. on May 17 and 18 at the school. Leading actors include Adam Hamer (Troy); Jenna Kelly (Gabriella); Karl Kirkpatrick (Ryan); Jessica Salerno (Sharpay); Patrick Dunleavy (Coach Bolton); and Christina Walter (Ms. Darbus). D128 Students Score Big at State Championships

Congratulations to Libertyville and Vernon Hills High School students who excelled in math and music at recent state competitions. Way to represent!

Students from Libertyville High School and Vernon Hills High School scored big at Saturday's Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Math Contest Finals at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The LHS team took first place in its division while the VHHS team placed second. In fine arts, the LHS Wind Ensemble and the VHHS Wind Ensemble were each named Honor Band in their divisions at the Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival, also held at the University of Illinois. Stevenson Student Torin Bakke Wins Chicago Symphony Orchestra Contest

Bakke placed first in the 2013 Crain-Maling Foundation Chicago Symphony Orchestra youth auditions.

This musician's dedication is playing off in a big way. Clarinetist Torin Bakke will have the opportunity to perform a solo in a Chicago Symphony Orchestra education concert as a reward for placing first in the 2013 Crain-Maling Foundation Chicago Symphony Orchestra youth auditions. Bakke, 15, played the first movement of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622 in his March 30 audition on Orchestra Hall’s Armour Stage. He was among seven youths to audition. Bakke, of Buffalo Grove, is homeschooled in the morning. In the afternoon, the freshman heads to Stevenson High School for physical education, German and French classes, he wrote on his blog. Don't Miss Spring Play at VHHS

"Almost, Maine" will be presented by the Vernon Hills High School Theatre Department May 2-4.

Vernon Hills High School is proud to present its spring play, "Almost, Maine," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Studio Theatre. Tickets are available at the box office. This romantic comedy by John Cariani is a series of nine vignettes taking place simultaneously on a snowy, mid winter evening in the small town of Almost, Maine. The story explores the journey to discover what lies behind relationships. The New York Times described the show as  "a whimsical approach to the joys and perils of romance. Magical happenings bloom beneath the snow drifts." Love is lost, found and confounded. But the bruises heal and hearts mend….almost. Stevenson High School Student Makes Illinois Musical Theatre Award Finals

Alex Levy of Stevenson High School is a finalist in the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards.

A Stevenson High School student is among 24 finalists in the 2013 Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards, the Daily Herald reports. Alex Levy of Buffalo Grove will audition today at Broadway Playhouse in Chicago. One actor and one actress will then be selected to had to the national finals in New York this summer, the newspaper reports.  The Illinois High School Musical Theater Awards (IHSMTA) began in 2012 to recognize outstanding student achievement in musical theater.

CLC Presents 'Fear No Art' this Weekend

The College of Lake County in Grayslake presents a visual showcase of art, dance and music at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday.

For 15 years, the College of Lake County’s "Fear No Art" production has showcased a variety of arts, including dance, music and visual art, by CLC students and faculty and community members. This year, the event will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts, 19351 W. Washington St., in Grayslake. More than 50 students are involved in the production, which is directed by Valerie Alpert of the CLC dance faculty. Fear No Art will feature the creativity of CLC’s vibrant performing arts community.
