National Night Out Offers Family Fun in Vernon Hills

Games, crafts and food will be among the attractions at the Aug. 6 event.

Vernon Hills citizens of all ages are invited to enjoy a variety of free family-friendly activities organized by the Vernon Hills Police Department to help foster police-community relations. This summer’s event will be held from 4-8 p.m. Aug. 6 at Hartmann Park.

Activities will include an inflatable playground, sand volleyball games against the police, a live DJ, crafts and games and of course, a barbecue. The event is free to attend and all residents are invited to participate.

Vernon Hills’ celebration is being held in order to celebrate the 30th Annual National Night Out Crime and Drug Prevention event. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Vernon Hills Police Department.

National Night Out is designed to: 1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; 3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and 4) send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

“Every year it just gets bigger and better,” said Officer Sharon Joseph, co-organizer of the event. “If the weather cooperates, we expect that this year will be no exception.”
