"I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award because of what it represents. Each and every day, I try to make a difference in the lives of others,” says Newbern. “Whether it's protecting families from mayhem in my agency, mentoring young people at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake County to inspire them to greatness beyond their current situation, or educating teens on the dangers of distracted driving to make an impact on teen driving behaviors, this recognition confirms my commitment and energizes me to continue on my mission to make a difference every day.”

The Most Influential African Americans of Lake County program has notable past winners including the mayor of the City of North Chicago, the honorable Leon Rockingham, senior vice president of e-Commerce for Kraft Foods, Paula Sneed, and Superintendent of the North Chicago School District, Dr. Patricia Pickles.

Individuals who are nominated for the Business Leadership Award show outstanding leadership in their field of endeavor and additionally go above and beyond to provide charitable efforts and positive leadership within the communities in which they serve. Newbern was noted for his work with father-son relationships, and his volunteer contributions to the University of Illinois Extension Foundation.
