Hawthorn School District 73 is a K-8 district serving about 4,000 students. It consists of six schools and serves the communities of Vernon Hills, Mundelein, Libertyville, Indian Creek and unincorporated areas of Lake County.

The district's mission says: "Hawthorn School District 73 is dedicated to achieving academic excellence. We believe in Learning for All, Working Together, and Doing Whatever It Takes!"

The school district was officially formed in 1924, when voters from three one-room schools (Coon, Butterfield and Hawthorn) decided to consolidate into one district.
