Local Veterans Face Long Waits for VA Benefits

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.

Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home--long wait times for their disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically with location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about eleven months, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. Data for the Chicago VA Regional Office shows that as of May 13, 2013, veterans waited an average of 501 days (more …

This is such a slap in the face to those brave men & women who defended this country. I really am beginning to hate the ineffective morons aka congress for not putting America & American first. They could change the red tape that they have helped create, but all their interested in is lining THEIR pocketbooks & helping their cronies get rich, too.   more ›

Stevenson Grad to Represent USA in Israel Triathlon

Ari Epstein will head to Israel in July to compete in the 19th World Maccabiah Games. Until then, he's training and seeking donations to achieve his goals.

When Ari Epstein travels to Israel to compete in a triathlon this summer, he won’t only represent the United States. The Long Grove resident said he’ll also represent his community, where he got his start in athletics. Epstein, 24, said swimming is his strong suit, but his times, combined with his cycling and running abilities collectively earned him a spot on Team USA in the 19th World Maccabiah Games, an international competition for Jewish athletes. Epstein joined Stevenson High School’s swim team as a sophomore, simply looking for a way to stay in shape a year after determining that football wasn’t the best fit for him. “I was really happy to be a swimmer at Stevenson. That was a really big part of this,” he said. He planned to …

Sweet 'Buttercream' Seeking a New Home

Check out this week's featured animal from Save-A-Pet!

Woof, woof…come on, let’s go outside and have some fun…oh and don’t forget to grab a tennis ball and a couple of squeaky toys because I love to play fetch. I was rescued from a rural animal control facility with no background information. People here say I am super affectionate, always smiling, and that I get along with dogs. With such a resume already, I even got to participate in community events and that was a lot of fun, meeting people and representing Save-A-Pet. I already know sit and am ready to learn more, anything for some kisses or a little treat! She is about 12 years old, spayed, up-to-date on routine shots and rabies, heartworm negative and on preventative and microchipped.   Bring home some fun and love! She is ready to …
