Some Vernon Area Public Library patrons got a sneak peek at the newly renovated building. Patch brings you an inside look.

With just a week left until its public reopening, Vernon Area Public Library welcomed a VIP crowd of library volunteers, staff and their families Tuesday night for a sneak peek at its newly renovated facility. Patrons were all smiles as they perused the building, which has been transformed into a more contemporary facility, complete with new shelving, seating, rooms and paint. “If the reaction of the general public is anything like it was last night, it will be really fun,” library spokeswoman Catherine Savage said. The $1.3 million renovations, which repurposed some staff space, resulted in almost 1,800 additional square feet for patrons. “Every patron space got improved in some way,” Savage said. The library now offers a quiet reading …

Brian Urlacher Says Goodbye to Professional Football

One of the most popular Chicago Bears is now calling it quits, according to CBS Chicago.

Chicago Bears veteran of 13 years Brian Urlacher officially retired Wednesday morning, according to CBS Chicago. The 34-year-old linebacker says he has no regrets ending a professional career playing exclusively for the Chicago Bears. “Although I could continue playing, I’m not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that’s up to my standards,” Urlacher told CBS news. "When considering this, along with the fact that I could retire after a 13 year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear.” Urlacher recently made news in March when he couldn’t strike a new contract deal with the Bears—claiming the one-year, $2 million offer was “a slap in the face.”  What's your reaction to …

He was too old and broken to keep playing, and that was proved very true by the free agent market for him, which was next to nothing. He could have still played, but not how he wanted to. He would have been a two down linebacker at best and mostly relegated to teaching the younger players. There is a reason teams like the Packers and Patriots are always good. They cut ties with people while they …   more ›

Baby, Baby, Baby: Three Dolphins Pregnant at Brookfield Zoo (PHOTOS)

The babies are due this summer and fall. Look through the photo gallery of the expectant moms, including the most incredible ultrasound picture you'll ever see.

Just a little more than a week after Mother’s Day, the Brookfield Zoo announced Monday it has three new moms to be. Dolphins Allie, Tapeko and Spree are expected to give birth during the summer and fall, according to a zoo release. “Allie, Tapeko, and Spree are all healthy and their pregnancies are progressing well,” said Jennifer Langan, associate veterinarian for the Chicago Zoological Society. Allie, 26, and Tapeko, 31, are experienced mothers, having raised five babies between them, including Tapeko’s two daughters, Noelani, 9, and Allison, 7, who also live at the zoo. This will be the first baby for Spree, 10, who is at the zoo from Minnesota as part of the Bottlenose Dolphin Breeding Consortium. The cooperative focuses on building a …

Where's the Cheapest Gas in Town?

You can use this gas price widget to always find the lowest price of the moment. Pro tip: Gas up early this week to save money.

Click here for a full-screen view of the gas price map. If you don't see a map of our local area, click the magnifying glass in the upper right to enter your address. Gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the past three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to…

Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try …

Dear Patch and sponsor Home Depot; This week, I have received numerous "Memorial Day Sale" promotions by post and email from vendors who should know better than dishonor a day of reverence with advertising. I know that it is now common to commercialize national holidays celebrating faith or honoring military service, but I ask that you not use Memorial Day for marketing. It is completely …   more ›

3 Fun Ways to Celebrate the Last Day of School

Kick start the summer fun by celebrating the last day of school with the kids

School's almost out and boy are my kids ready for their fun in the sun. While I still think it is unfair that parents don't get the summer off, I do look forward to our annual tradition of kicking off the summer break with some fun together.  Parents, if you can, take the afternoon off or dedicate a whole day for pure fun. Here are some ideas to inspire your celebration: 1. Hit the pool! Let the splashing begin. Head on over to your local pool and start working on that gorgeous tan while splashing around with the kids.  2. Go see a movie during the day. If it's raining or you just want to enjoy extreme air conditioning, take advantage of that early bird, weekday discount to see the latest family flick. It will be a rare pleasure for the …
