Visitation for Vernon Hills resident James Sauter will be held from 3-9 p.m. April 1 at Moraine Valley Church, 6300 W. 127th St., Palos Heights. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. April 2 at the church. Sauter, an Illinois State Police trooper, died when a semi-truck crashed into his police car early Friday morning on I-294 at Willow Road. He was 28 years old. Interment will be private. Contributions can be made to the Sauter family in lieu of flowers.

William G. Butler, 83, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, at Westmoreland Nursing Center in Lake Forest surrounded by his family. He was born November 17, 1929 in El Paso, TX, and grew up in a military family that moved constantly. He served in ROTC as a student in high school; after graduation he joined the Army in 1949 in Astoria, Oregon. Bill retired in 1970 after 23 years of service. Among his many accomplishments, he served as a Shooting Instructor at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he received many medals and awards as an expert marksman. He was a highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel that served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars, and also aided in the coordination of President Eisenhower's Funeral. Frances Opeka, of Green Oaks, age 102, passed away peacefully on March 19 at Libertyville Manor in Libertyville. She was born in Vrhnika, Slovenia on Nov. 12, 1910 and had resided in the North Chicago, Waukegan, and now Green Oaks area. In Slovenia, Frances received advanced degrees in mathematics and physics. She taught school for many years before fleeing Slovenia from communism. Frances retired from Abbott Laboratories 40 years ago, where she worked on the IV assembly lines. She was a member of the former Mother of God Church in Waukegan and currently a member of Queen of Peace and St. Joseph Church. Frances was also a member of St. Mary’s No. 79 K.S.K.J. lodge. Nancy N. Grace, 83, passed away on Sat. March 16, 2013 at the Winchester House. She was born June 23, 1929 in Evanston, where she was a 1947 graduate of Evanston High School. Nancy graduated in 1951 from Knox College in Galesburg, IL, with a Bachelor degree in Music Education. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She received her Masters degree in music from the University of Colorado. She was the choir and orchestra director at Libertyville High School for 16 years. She also gave private string instrument lessons in her home for 50 years. Elizabeth A. "Betty" Croonborg, 95, passed away on Wed. March 13, 2013 at Advocate Condell Medical Center. She was born Nov. 19, 1917 in North Chicago and was a Libertyville resident for most of her life. Betty was a graduate of Highland Park HS and a member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville. She loved being with her grandchildren and enjoyed antiquing and her Irish heritage. She was still driving at 95 and was an avid Bears, Bulls and Cubs fan. Daryl E. Luce, 86, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Winchester House in Libertyville. He was born June 1, 1926 in Libertyville, where he remained a resident all his life. He was a 1944 graduate of LHS, followed by serving in the South Pacific with the US Army during WW II. After the war, he was a graduate of Lake Forest College and received his MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Daryl was a retired employee of the Frank G. Hough/International Harvester Corporation, was a charter member of the Libertyville VFW Post and enjoyed golf and fishing. Beatrice Jost (nee Blocks), of Prairie View, passed away March 8 at Highland Park Hospital. Beatrice was born April 16, 1929 in Wheeling to Leo and Isabell Blocks. Bea married Ed Jost on April 23, 1949 at St. Mary's Church in Buffalo Grove. She worked in the Stevenson High School cafeteria for many years and was known for her famous chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed the outdoors whether cycling (motor and bike), snowmobiling or RV’ing with her family. Beatrice enjoyed following the Cubs and Blackhawks but being with her grandchildren, watching them play sports or perform music made her the most proud. Kenneth A. Varney, of Libertyville, passed away March 4 at Lake Forest Hospital with his family by his side. Ken was born April 19, 1927 in Waukegan and was a lifelong resident of Libertyville. He served in the US Army from 1945-1947, a Veteran of World War II, serving in Korea. Ken graduated from Libertyville High School in 1945. He worked for road builders in Lake and Cook County and was a member of Operating Engineers Local 150 for over 60 years. In retirement he was employed part time by Graham Enterprises for 10 years. Ken's most endearing traits were his sense of humor, sharp wit and indomitable spirit. He will be missed by those of us who love him. Ken is preceded in death by his son, Allen, and his brother Herbert. He is survived …
