District 103 Student Places 2nd in National Geographic Bee

Lincolnshire student Conrad Oberhaus knows his geography!

Can you name the peak that is farthest from the Earth's center, due to a bulge in the equator in Ecuador? Conrad Oberhaus can, and his correct response won him $15,000 Wednesday, when he placed second in the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. A seventh-grader at Daniel Wright Junior High, Oberhaus came in a single point behind Sathwik Karnik, a 12-year-old from Massachusetts. The 25th annual bee was hosted by Alex Trebek. The contest will be aired at 6 p.m. May 23 on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD. The finals will also be aired at 7 p.m. May 27 on WTTW.

VHHS Band Concert to be Broadcast Live

Vernon Hills High School's Cougar-TV will air the band concert live beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Take a break Thursday night to check out the Vernon Hills High School band concert, to be broadcast live from 7:30-9:30 p.m. by Cougar-TV on highschoolcube.com. The performance will feature Meri Bennett-Swanson on oboe and Paige Kibbler on French horn.

Looking for work? More than 70 employers will be represented at the College of Lake County's job fair on Thursday.

Job seekers are invited to attend the JobMarketPlace Job Fair on Thursday, May 23, sponsored by the College of Lake County Career and Placement Services office. The fair will be held from 1-5 p.m. in the P.E. Center, Building 7, 19351 W. Washington St., in Grayslake. This is Lake County’s largest job fair, where participants can explore full-time, part-time, seasonal and professional job opportunities with more than 70 employers. In 2012, about 50 employers attended the annual job fair, according to Sylvia Johnson Jones, executive director of the CLC Career and Placement Services office. VHHS Boys Advance to State Track and Field Meet

The sectional boys track and field meet was held Friday at Vernon Hills High School.

Six Vernon Hills High School boys track and field athletes have advanced to the state finals, to be held May 23-25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The IHSA's Class 2A Vernon Hills Sectional boys track and field meet was held Friday. Under the direction of head coach Mark Whitney, VHHS placed third in the overall team scores, according to the IHSA. Lakes Community High School placed first, while Grayslake Central High School placed second. Senior Oleg Babin placed first in the pole vault. Senior Nick Foley placed third in the pole vault.
