Picture this: It's a warm August evening. As the sun's rays fade, you're soon surrounded by glowing hot air balloons. Now imagine this taking place right here in Lake County. The Village of Grayslake is planning to host its first-ever hot air balloon festival, Color Aloft!, on Aug. 24 in Central Park. The event is set to feature six balloons, along with live entertainment and a few food vendors. Gov. Pat Quinn asked President Barack Obama this week to declare 11 Illinois counties major disaster areas following the storms and heavy rainfall that moved through the state in mid-April. If the governor’s request is approved, residents in those counties will be eligible to apply for grants and low-interest federal loans to help recover from the historic flooding. Counties included in the request are Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Fulton, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, McHenry and Will. “We must do everything possible to help families impacted by this historic flooding as they rebuild their lives,” Gov. For the past eight years, the Busy Brains Children's Museum has been trying to find a permanent location for exhibits that stress the power of play. The museum's hands-on exhibits have traveled to various venues around Lake County since the museum's inception in 2004, visiting places like fairs and day care centers. Now, however, the Busy Brains Children's Museum is close to purchasing property, including a building, in Lake Villa. The museum will hold its fourth annual fundraiser May 4 at the Lehmann Mansion, 485 N. Milwaukee Ave., Lake Villa. The event, which will be held from 7 to 11 p.m., will feature a cash bar, live music, silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Proceeds from the "Brain Builder 2013: Mingle at the Mansion" event will help …

The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) was presented with several Victim Service Awards from Anita Alvarez Cook County States Attorney as part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week on April 23. The Cook County State’s Attorney Office recognizes teams, individuals, programs and organizations that demonstrate outstanding service in support of crime victims and victim services. Three AAIM advocates and the organization were recognized for promoting the rights of crime victims, and advocating on their behalf with compassion and commitment for victims of impaired driving. The Lake County Emergency Operations Center remains open as the county continues to coordinate with government agencies on flood response efforts. As of Monday morning, the Des Plaines River at Gurnee had crested and water is slowly receding. The Chain O'Lakes/Fox River is expected to crest sometime today. Officials estimate structures on an estimated 4,000 to 4,500 parcels across the county have been impacted by the floods. Current Conditions Chain O'Lakes/Fox River System The Chain appears to be cresting today. Tributaries remain full or nearly full, and there is limited capacity for additional stormwater runoff. This year the Lake County Division of Transportation is celebrating 100 years of service to Lake County.
In this video from LCTV, learn how a transportation system that started as dirt roads has become an impressive network of safe and efficient roadways, intersections, roundabouts and bike paths. Prior to 1913, most of the roads in Illinois were dirt roads and inclement weather made them nearly impossible to navigate. Because of this, a movement arose to "get Illinois out of the mud," according to the Lake County Division of Transportation. At that time, roads within the state of Illinois were the responsibility of the individual townships. What can the village do? If it is their fault that you flooded, then they should help. Otherwise, I'm not sure why they should pay for Waste Management to pick up your garbage. This begs the question - Do you have flood insurance? Sadly, most people do not realize that they have no coverage if they flood.
