Plan Ahead for Paczki Day in Vernon Hills

Mariano's in Vernon Hills and Lovin Oven Cakery in Libertyville and Round Lake Beach are already selling the traditional Mardi Gras treat.

It's paczki time! Get your fix at Mariano's Fresh Market in Vernon Hills and at Lovin Oven Cakery in Libertyville. Both stores already have them on the shelves. Paczkis, to some, are a last hurrah of sorts on Fat Tuesday (also called Mardi Gras or Paczki Day), which falls the day before the start of the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting for Catholics. Mariano's is offering four paczki flavors—prune, lemon, raspberry and Bavarian cream. A bakery worker advised customers who want a lot of paczkis should call ahead at (847) 816-0994 to place an order. Lovin Oven Cakery in Libertyville has been selling paczkis in limited quantities for more than a week "because they are so popular," said day manager Jennifer Joel. "We spend a …

Roundy's CEO Bob Mariano Speaks at Business Event

Mariano and American Chartered Bank President Dan Miller spoke of the importance of employees in growing a business.

When it comes to the supermarkets that make up the Roundy's family, including Mariano's, the strength of the company lies in its people, says Bob Mariano, chairman and chief executive officer of Roundy's. "We have to teach and have a shared vision … so they do things because they want to, not because they're told what to do," Mariano told a sizable group of people who attended a recent GLMV (Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills) Chamber of Commerce business mixer. From going the extra mile for a customer to greeting people in a genuine way, "they have to want to do it," Mariano added. He shared the story of a young man who works at Mariano's in Palatine. While gathering carts, the young man greets customers as they get out of …

Mariano's does NOT value its employees. They test them with contempt, disrespect and intimidation. Bob Mariano isa LIAR. That story is false. He is no better than Walmart, all employees are part time, are told to do so much work they cannot complete then are disciplined because work not done, benefits are ONLY provided by union, and union is corrupt and bought and paid for by Bob Mariano to do …   more ›

Mariano's Could Soon Have Larger Parking Lot

The new 134-space lot at the Vernon Hills store would be completed by the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays.

Attention, Mariano's Fresh Market shoppers. Your store could soon have a larger parking lot. The Vernon Hills Village Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to direct staff to draft an ordinance to allow the expanded parking lot on the Mariano's site. The new 134-space lot would be constructed just east of the existing lot on 1.89 acres of land. John Kalmar, assistant village manager and director of community development, provided an update to the village board. He said the planning and zoning commission voted 4-0 to recommend approval of the parking lot. According to a written summary provided to the village board, representatives from Roundy's and Bradford Real Estate Services Corp. explained to the commission at its Aug. 8 meeting that "…

Good to learn this -- close-in parking was inadequate at the outset for a store that size. Their Roundy's products are competitively priced and the store offers so much variety that it is worth the inconvenience of circling to find a parking spot. My only coplaint is the crowding. The rudeness of the shoppers is a bit shocking, but that is not Mariano's fault. Both do make it less enjoyable to be…   more ›
