Members of the Vernon Hills Police Department will join representatives from law enforcement agencies across Illinois in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics on Sunday, June 9. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Illinois. The annual intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects have two goals: to raise money and to gain awareness for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Illinois. The Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised nearly $28 million over 27 years while increasing awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their accomplishments. Vernon Hills police officers will climb onto the roof of Dunkin' Donuts May 31 to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics of Illinois. Customers at the donut shop will be greeted by the officers from above between 5-9 a.m. that morning. Those who donate money to the Special Olympics will receive a coupon for a free doughnut or coffee. This is the sixth year for the "Cops on the Rooftop" event in Vernon Hills, which has raised more than $5,776 in the last five years. It is also the second of three main efforts this year by the police department to raise money for the cause. The Vernon Hills Police Department is looking for children's artistic touches as it plans this year's 5K run/walk fundraiser. The department's race committee is seeking original artwork from any student in kindergarten through eighth grade that can be used on posters, flyers and other promotional materials. This year will mark the sixth year "Run from the Cops" event. The proceeds from the July 21 run/walk will benefit Honor Flight Chicago, an organization dedicated to honoring our nation's World War II veterans. Participating veterans are flown to Washington, D.C., to experience the World War II Memorial. Vernon Hills police are stepping up seat belt enforcement this month as part of a crackdown on unsafe drivers. Extra officers will be on the streets through May 27, in honor of Memorial Day, to watch for drivers who are driving in an unsafe way. These details are a continuation of the state grant the Vernon Hills Police Department received to increase seat belt usage throughout the state. Since 2012, Illinois law requires all passengers, regardless of age or location in the vehicle, to be secured in a seat belt or an appropriately approved child restraint system. The Vernon Hills Police Department will host a women’s self-defense class from 7-9 p.m. May 21 at the Vernon Hills Police Department. This class is free and is open to female residents of Vernon Hills, ages 8 and up (children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent). The instructor for the class will be Harriet Johnson, director of the Crystal Lake Hapkido School. Johnson is a former police officer and is an expert in self-defense. After the shooting, a note was found on Howard Lazarus stating he had cancer and couldn't "do the deed" himself.
Howard Lazarus, the 53-year-old Mundelein man who was shot by Vernon Hills Police last month in an alleged suicide by cop mission, pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated assault when he appeared in Lake County court Thursday, reported the Vernon Hills Review. On April 3, Lazarus entered the Vernon Hills Police Department to report a traffic accident then drew what appeared to be a gun on an officer. The officer fired two rounds at Lazarus, striking him once in the abdomen, after telling him several times to drop the weapon, which turned out to be fake, Patch reported.
