New Stores, Improvements Proposed for Rivertree Shopping Center

Ross Dress for Less and Destination XL plan to open this year in the Vernon Hills shopping center.

Rivertree Shopping Center storefronts took a step closer to getting facelifts Tuesday, when new stores requested permission to make façade improvements before opening in Vernon Hills. Ross Dress for Less and Destination XL both plan to move into empty storefronts in the shopping center at 701 N. Milwaukee Ave. Ross Dress for Less plans to move into the Office Depot site, located between Eloise Chicago and the former Old Country Buffet. Office Depot is moving to the vacant storefront near Old Navy, officials said. Architectural drawings show an increased height on front of the store, which would have brick columns and edges. Not all officials were familiar with Ross, a relative newcomer to the suburbs.  “What is Ross Dress for Less?” …

Editor's Notebook

Farewell, 2012! Hello, 2013!

I'm taking a look back at some of my favorite moments of 2012 in Libertyville and Vernon Hills.

I'm taking a look back at 2012 and remembering the great times I've had while working for Patch. I've been with Patch for more than a year and a half now. I spent the first year as the editor of Lake Zurich Patch. Then, the editor spot opened up for Libertyville Patch and I jumped at the opportunity. I've always loved Libertyville. I grew up in Lake County and always loved Libertyville's beautiful downtown. At the same time, I was presented with the opportunity to launch Vernon Hills Patch. The site launched on May 31, 2012, and has been growing ever since. I've spent so much time in Vernon Hills over the years; Westfield Hawthorn Mall is, after all, our local shopping mecca when it comes to malls. These past several months in Libertyville…

The facility would be located on the tract of land between the new Mariano's parking lot extension and the strip of businesses that includes Starbuck's and Panda Express. J.Q. Freeman, senior vice president of MPV Properties, said the facility would offer services like oil changes and light car repairs. According to village board meeting documents, the facility will consist of 7,790 square feet and the design is consistent …

Dave & Buster's May be Coming to Vernon Hills

The restaurant/arcade would be located at Westfield Hawthorn Mall between Carson's and Sears.

Vernon Hills may soon be home to a Dave & Buster's restaurant/arcade. Dave & Buster's representatives approached the village board with a concept presentation during the committee-of-the-whole meeting Dec. 18. The restaurant/arcade would be constructed at Westfield Hawthorn Mall on both levels between Sears and Carson Pirie Scott. The 40,000-square-foot facility would have two entrances on the lower level: one inside the mall and the other outside, to permit it to be open past mall hours. Hide Kashima, development director for Westfield, said Dave & Buster's would occupy a number of upper-level spaces, including Glow Golf and the former Build-a-Bear site. Lisa Warren, vice president of development for Dave & Buster's, said the Vernon Hills…

Vernon Hills Man Wants to Start Online Wine-Selling Business

Eric Krupka hopes to launch the Redline Cellars website in February.

A Vernon Hills resident is looking to take his affinity for wine and translate it into an online wine-selling business. Eric Krupka is awaiting Vernon Hills Village Board approval to sell wine online through a new business, Redline Cellars. The village board will have to amend the Vernon Hills liquor code to create a new classification that allows for the online sale of wine. Krupka will also have to undergo a background check. Krupka said he has started a lot of businesses in the past, including EHK Sports Enterprises, which he operates out of Vernon Hills. "I love wine, so I might as well get into the wine business," said Krupka. His plan is to order the wines from various distributors and have them delivered to a rented space in Vernon …

The three groups reached an agreement "in principle," with the sale closing by Jan. 1, 2013.

It appears that the Central Lake YMCA facility will be saved. Negotiations Continue Between Village, Park District and YMCA

The Central Lake YMCA in Vernon Hills is set to close Oct. 31.

The Village of Vernon Hills and the Vernon Hills Park District boards agreed late Thursday night to continue negotiating with the Lake County Family YMCA on the possible purchase of the organization's Vernon Hills facility. Central Lake Y Could Be Bought By Village, Run By Vernon Hills Park District

Residents who spoke at a special board meeting Oct. 22 are supportive of the move.

Vernon Hills resident Mark Alexander can be counted among those who would like to see the village and the Vernon Hills Park District save the Central Lake YMCA. "I'd like to see it happen," said Alexander. A member of the Central Lake Y for the past 10 years, Alexander spoke out in favor of saving the facility at a special park district meeting Oct. 22. "I'm for the village and park district being involved," Alexander told the board. "I think there are some issues with the YMCA; it's not perfect. But I like it and it's convenient and reasonably-priced. It's been a real asset." Vernon Hills resident Greg Scharf echoed those sentiments. He has been a member of the YMCA for the past three or four years and said he and his wife use the …

Park District Board Meeting Tonight to Discuss Possible Central Lake YMCA Purchase

The Vernon Hills Village Board will also hold a special meeting Oct. 23 to discuss the possible purchase.

The Vernon Hills Park District will hold a special meeting today, Oct. 22, with Lake County Family YMCA staff as discussions continue on how to keep the Central Lake YMCA from closing. The Lake County Family YMCA, which operates facilities in Waukegan and Vernon Hills, announced Sept. 28 that it will permanently close the doors of both facilities at the end of this month.
