Updated: Man Charged After Making Bomb Threat at Century Park

Vernon Hills police say James N. Trelford called in the bomb threat Saturday night. He faces a felony charge of disorderly conduct.

A Libertyville man who was arrested after telling police that he had planted bombs at Vernon Hills' Summer Celebration later admitted there were no explosives. Instead, he told police, he was simply angry that a woman he met at the event didn't like him.

James N. Trelford, 48, whose last known address was 105 2nd St., Libertyville, called Vernon Hills police at 11:08 p.m. July 20 to report he had planted three bombs on the Summer Celebration grounds at Century Park. He said the bombs would detonate in 15 minutes, police said.

Police determined the cell phone was registered to Trelford and they traced the cell phone call to the area of Lakeview Parkway and the EJ&E railroad tracks. The area is about one-half mile north of the Summer Celebration site.

At 11:20 p.m. a Vernon Hills police officer located Trelford walking from the trail north of the tracks into the Lowe's parking lot on Milwaukee Avenue north of the EJ&E tracks. That's when Trelford told police that there were no bombs and that he was mad because a woman who he had met at Summer Celebration did not like him.

“We take calls of this nature very seriously. Our primary concern was for the safety of everyone at the Summer Celebration,” Police Chief Mark Fleischhauer said. “Quick action and teamwork on the part of our telecommunicators and officers kept this from becoming a very complex investigation.”
